Research directions

  • Pedagogical technologies: socialization and vocational rehabilitation research, general theory of socialization, patterns of behaviour, social norms, values, consumer culture, business skills and information technology in the process of socializing, etc.
  • Special pedagogy: Children with Special Needs, people with disabilities to socialize and re-socialization problems and their solutions, specialized technology research and implementation.;
  • Social pedagogy and rehabilitation technologies: Social risk families' aid technology, population crisis and psychosocial problems, Active ageing of the population and public health problem research and implement solutions, etc.


PSPI strategic aim: to develop scientific research capacity by providing technological excellence (scientifically supported theoretical, practical and informative base, etc.) and transfer of innovations to reduce socialization and re-socialization problems of personality (especially for people with disabilities and special needs) social security and integration, human security and violence prevention sphere, carrying out interdisciplinary research and promoting individual and public safety (According to the Cabinet of Ministers  priority scientific direction No.5 "Social impact").



  1. to develop scientific research capacity:
  • providing scientific staff’s  qualification development, internship and participation in nationally significant projects in Latvia and / or abroad, promoting the development of language skills and growth opportunities;
  • encouraging the existing PSRI scientific staff to acquire doctoral degree;
  • attracting new professionals in the research process, expanding their experience, encouraging participation and increasing competitiveness in labour market;
  •  involving new professors from Latvia and abroad in the work of the Institute;
  1. to provide technological excellence and innovation transfer to solve the issues connected with socialization and re-socialization and human security (especially for people with disabilities and special needs) in the region of Latgale and in Latvia:
  • Carrying out interdisciplinary research and innovation transfer in the sphere of socialization, re-socialization, and human security: EDUCATION / PERSONALITY SOCIALIZATION (5. Humanities and Social Sciences, 5.2. Social sciences; 5.22. Pedagogy) - RE-SOCIALIZATION / (3. Biology and Medical Science, 3.15. Medical Base science -Society health, rehabilitation) - PEDAGOGY TECHNOLOGIES / SOCIAL and REHABILITATION TECHNOLOGIES and INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES (2.Engineering and Computer Science, 2.1 Computer science, 2.11. Information technologies), continuing collaboration with the scientific institutions of Latvian and abroad.
  • to promote the transfer of innovation by continuing to publish two internationally reviewed scientific PSRI annual editions, which have received International Standard Serial Number ISSN;
  • In collaboration with LAS and other universities of Latvia and foreign countries to take part in internationally reviewed scientific editorial boards and publish research results in internationally quotable publications;
  • Organize the annual International Scientific Conferences "Society, Integration, Education";
  • In cooperation with the U.S. DHF to continue organizing PSBH scientific practical conferences;
  •  Involvement into the European Spatial Planning Observation Network (ESPON).
  1. Since September 1, 2008 in collaboration with LU, DU and foreign universities implement the doctoral programme "Pedagogy":
  • to prepare a curriculum and carry out its international accreditation, with an emphasis on bilingual approach and advanced study of three directions: special education, comprehensive education and vocational training; preparing own new science doctors and involving doctoral students in PSRI work, research and projects already during the study process;
  • promoting the confirmation of experts in Latvia Council of Science among PSRI  research staff;
  •  to establish  promotion programme for implementing the study programme "Pedagogy";
  •  to promote scholarship attraction and to encourage material support for achievements in studies and science.
  1. To ensure the sustainable development of the scientific programme and to create the relation between science, practice and society in Latgale region:
  • providing a scientifically well-founded theoretical, practical and informative base, etc., taking part into scientific research at EU level and attracting EU and other  funding bases for the development;
  • the establishing two regional professional associations "Association of Latgale region social pedagogues and social rehabilitator" and” Association of  Latgale region special pedagogues "that will provide working places for young scientific workers;
  •  ensuring the availability of results between science and practice in four databases created on PSRI website: scientific article(ISSN), database, Journal (ISSN) published article database, Conference proceedings (ISSN) published in a summary database,  database of published monographs.
